Summary volume 1 chapter 1 and 2

In chapter 1 we meet Pip who is mourning his dead parents and 5 siblings. A convict shows up and threatens him with a young man who is not seen. He asks for a file so he can escape the iron rings on his legs. In chapter 2 Pip runs home where we meet his sister and her husband Joe Gargery. She raised him by hand meaning she would beat him if he did something wrong. She is unattractive so may have used the same methods to get a husband. Over dinner Pip hides bread up his trousers and Joe believes he bolted it and shouts it out. His sister gives him some tar water to help. He then goes in his room and waits until everyone is asleep. He goes downstairs gets the supplies and leaves.
