Ever thought how terrifying it would be to get lost at sea. Andy Weir took this concept to a new level in his sci-fi novel The Martian. The book begins with a crew on Mars. They are informed that a dangerous storm hit the site. They are forced to leave before anyone gets hurt. While getting back to the ship one of them is hit by a rock sending him flying into the storm. The crew are forced to evacuate without him. This is how our main character is introduced. Mark Watney. The next mission to Mars is in 4 years. But that is not the problem. How will he get food. Watney being an expert Botanist devises a risky plan to get food and water. They sent up potatoes to cook for a special occasion. Using the seeds in the potatoes he must find a way to grow them. He brings martian soil into the hab and mixes it with human excrement and water to get a sustainable farm going. The plan for getting the water is dangerous but he has no other choice. He must make the water itself. Burning hydrogen. Doing this puts risk on exploding the hab. Meanwhile the book also follows the people on Earth trying to communicate with Watney.
In my opinion The Martian is a great book to read. It mixes science, comedy and survival instinct to give a very enjoyable read that won’t be regretted. The twist to a classic survival story is a very interesting concept in a book that every one can read.
RELATION TO DIRE AMBITION
The theme of dire ambition is has a very key role in moving the book forward. There are many things that can and do go wrong when you are stranded on a planet on your own with barely any food. Ambition is what helped Mark Watney actually do thing he did to survive. In a situation like his there would be many reasons to give up. I do believe that dire ambition was used very frequently through the entirety of the book. It created interesting plot, points and made the book what it is. Without ambition what sort of a book would it actually have been. In this book it was mainly used in important parts where there was no hope at all. Overall the importance of dire ambition was a key feature which made this a good book.
